PROJECT 650 HP [superceded by project 750HP]...
This busted piston and rod is why I initiated that project.
It probably broke because the 2G Eclipses ('97-99) were defected with
"walking crankshafts" which probably was enough, coupled with the high horsepower conditions, to blow the rod which then in turn disitigrated most of the lower portion of the piston whle the rod spun off in two directions.
One piece ripped apart the crank area and surrounding block while one part broke off and through the front of the engine.
My new engine is a new 2.4L hybrid 4G64 from
Magnus Motorsports which features anti-crankwalk measures (6-bolt block and balance shaft elimination), less rotating mass, kinfe-edged crank, high performance custom forged pistons and rods, etc.
As you can see, I removed the manifolds, head, cams, transmission, and engine block (all of these will be replaced with high perfomance versions).
I didn't even need an engine hoist for this. None of the stuff was especially heavy and I was able to get everything out from the bottom of the car.
Here is the old 7-bolt Fidanza Aluminum flywheel with friction plate removed (I have a new 6-bolt Fidanza flywheel for the new engine). You can also see the ACT 2600 lbs. pressure plate and clutch disc. These have been replaced with the ACT MaxXtreme 2900lbs. pressure plate and ceramic 6-puck racing disc.
These are some views of the engine compartment. Notice the engine is not there so there is plenty of walking space... I plan on doing a lot of cleaning/polishing/painting in there. You might notice that I have the A/C compressor and lines bungee'd for support so I don't lose my refrigerant.
